In a major step toward advancing robotics and artificial intelligence research, The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) has announced the launch of the Hong Kong Embodied AI Lab.
Developed through CUHK’s InnoHK Hong Kong Centre for Logistics Robotics (HKCLR), the new facility is being described as Hong Kong’s first full-stack interactive robotics laboratory. Supported by a 5-year roadmap, the lab aims to speed up the conversion of advanced research into industrial applications while also training future technology talent.
The project is focused on accelerating embodied AI research and expanding the commercial use of robotics technologies across industries such as logistics, manufacturing, and services.
Speaking at the launch event, Winnie Chan, Assistant Commissioner for Innovation and Technology at Hong Kong’s Innovation and Technology Commission, called the initiative “a timely reflection of our vision and dedication in AI and I&T development.”
“By bringing together academia and industry, and by focusing on real-world applications, I am confident that the Lab will serve as an important hub for collaboration, innovation, and technology transfer, accelerating the journey from research to real-world impact,” Chan said.
During the event, the lab showcased several robotics systems currently under development. These included Hong Kong’s first AI-powered dual-arm robotic platform designed for home and service tasks using multimodal sensors and mobile manipulation technology.
Researchers also introduced a lightweight robotic arm weighing only 6 kg with “millimetre-level” precision, along with an all-terrain quadruped robot equipped with reinforcement learning-based motion control and visual navigation systems.
Professor Dou Qi, Associate Director of HKCLR, highlighted a vision-language robotics model jointly developed by HKCLR and a CUHK research team. According to the university, the research was recently published in the journal Science Robotics, with some technologies already being deployed beyond the laboratory.
To support commercialization efforts, the lab has partnered with 24 industry partners, investors, and technology companies, including robotics firms from mainland China, Hong Kong, and Vietnam.
