Amid rising global demand for AI computing power, Google and Blackstone have announced a new $5 billion joint venture focused on building large-scale TPU cloud infrastructure. The partnership aims to strengthen AI data centre capacity and provide businesses with more access to high-performance AI computing.

The new US-based company will offer Google’s Tensor Processing Units (TPUs) as a compute-as-a-service platform. The venture plans to bring 500 MW of AI data centre capacity online by 2027, with further expansion planned over time.

TPUs are Google’s custom-built AI chips designed for training and running advanced AI models. These processors power several AI applications, including Google Gemini, financial workloads, and high-performance computing systems.

Blackstone, which manages more than $1.3 trillion in assets and is one of the world’s largest digital infrastructure investors, will make an initial equity investment of $5 billion into the project.

The partnership combines Google’s AI hardware, software, and technical expertise with Blackstone’s experience in digital infrastructure and energy management. The companies said the move is aimed at meeting the rapidly growing need for accelerated AI computing globally.

Blackstone has also appointed Benjamin Treynor Sloss as CEO of the new venture. Sloss is a long-time Google executive with more than 20 years of experience managing Google’s infrastructure and operations.

Speaking about the partnership, Jon Gray, President and COO of Blackstone, said, “We see a generational opportunity to invest capital at scale building AI infrastructure. This new company has enormous potential as it helps to meet the unprecedented demand for compute.”

Thomas Kurian, CEO of Google Cloud, added, “This joint venture with Blackstone helps meet growing demand for TPUs, which are optimized specifically for efficiency and performance in the AI era.”

The companies said the venture will also give enterprises more flexibility and options to run AI workloads beyond Google Cloud’s existing services.
