Managing passkeys across different apps and password managers could soon become easier for Android users. Google is reportedly testing a new feature in Google Password Manager that would allow users to import and export passkeys between supported password management apps.
According to a report by a technology publication, Google is working on updated options inside Google Password Manager that would replace the existing “Import passwords” and “Export passwords” settings with new “Import passwords & passkeys” and “Export passwords & passkeys” options.
The feature has reportedly not been released publicly yet, and Google has not confirmed an official rollout timeline.
Screenshots shared in the report suggest that Android users may soon receive prompts to transfer passkeys when opening another password manager app. When users select the import option, they could be asked to choose the password manager currently storing their passkeys.
After selecting “Next,” Android devices are expected to display all compatible password managers installed on the handset. Users would then reportedly be able to move passwords, passkeys and other saved login details directly into Google Password Manager.
The report stated that Bitwarden was used as a supported password manager during testing for passkey transfers.
The upcoming feature is likely to work only with password managers that support the Credential Exchange Protocol (CXP), a system designed to make passkey transfers easier across different apps and platforms.
Google, Apple and Samsung are already part of the CXP initiative. Apple has also reportedly enabled passkey transfers to third-party password managers through iOS 26 and macOS 26.
Passkeys were introduced as a more secure alternative to traditional passwords. Instead of typing passwords, users can sign in using methods such as fingerprint authentication, face unlock, PINs or screen patterns.
The new transfer feature could help solve one of the biggest usability challenges with passkeys by making it easier for users to switch between password managers without losing access to stored credentials.
