Authorities in Sri Lanka have arrested 14 foreign nationals during a cybercrime crackdown in the Kalutara area after intelligence officials uncovered an alleged internet-based criminal operation.
The Walana Central Anti-Corruption Task Force confirmed that the arrests were carried out on May 14 following a tip-off received by the unit’s Director, ASP Rohan Olugala, regarding a group of foreigners suspected of planning cybercrimes while staying illegally in the country.
The arrested group included 10 Chinese men, 1 Chinese woman, 1 Malaysian man and 1 Malaysian woman. According to officials, the suspects were staying at a hotel in the Mahawaskaduwa area on Beach Road in Waskaduwa, Kalutara North.
After receiving the information, intelligence officers from the task force conducted a surveillance operation to verify the claims. Following the investigation, police obtained a search warrant from the Kalutara Court and carried out a raid at the location.
During the search, officers reportedly found that preliminary construction work was being carried out to establish an “operations centre” at the premises.
Authorities also stated that the suspects did not possess valid visas to remain in the country.
The investigation is currently being handled by the Walana Central Anti-Corruption Task Force as officials continue to examine the nature of the suspected cybercrime activities linked to the group.
