NABARD-backed tech initiative aims to modernize rural banking infrastructure

India is considering the creation of a central technology hub to help Regional Rural Banks improve digital banking services and tackle emerging risks such as AI misuse. The move is aimed at making rural banking more secure, efficient, and technologically advanced.

According to the update, NABARD may lead the initiative by building a centralized back-office system for RRBs. The proposed model could provide shared digital tools, stronger cybersecurity systems, and improved data analytics support for rural banks across the country.

The initiative is expected to help RRBs improve customer services while strengthening protection against rising digital and cyber threats.

Regional Rural Banks have already shown strong financial growth. RRBs reported a profit of Rs 7,720 crore during the first 9 months of fiscal 2026. Their total business also expanded to Rs 12.35 lakh crore during the same period.

The government is continuing its support for the sector through Viability Plan 2.0, which will remain active until fiscal 2028. Alongside financial support, authorities are also working on reforms focused on cybersecurity, compliance, and digital infrastructure upgrades.

The planned technology hub is being seen as a major step toward modernizing rural banking systems and improving digital access outside major urban centers. The effort also reflects a wider push to strengthen secure banking operations in smaller towns and rural regions.
