Meta introduces gesture-based messaging and new AI smart glasses features

Meta has introduced a major software update for its AI-powered smart glasses, the Meta Ray-Ban Display, bringing a new feature called “neural handwriting.” The update allows users to type messages without using a physical or on-screen keyboard.

With the new feature, users can write messages in the air or use subtle hand gestures to communicate through the smart glasses. The technology is powered by a neural wristband that tracks hand movements and converts them into commands such as typing messages or controlling the device interface.

The neural handwriting system, which was first introduced with the device, now supports a wider range of apps. Users can use the feature across WhatsApp, Messenger, Instagram, and native Android and iOS messaging services.

Meta has also added several other upgrades with the latest update. A new display recording feature allows users to capture what they see through the in-lens display along with real-world visuals and surrounding audio in a single video. The feature is designed to make content creation and sharing directly from the smart glasses easier.

The update further improves navigation capabilities by expanding walking directions support across the US and major global cities including London, Paris, and Rome.

In addition, live captions for voice conversations are now available on WhatsApp, Messenger, and Instagram Direct, offering improved accessibility and communication support for users.

Alongside the consumer-focused upgrades, Meta has opened developer preview access for its platform. Developers can now build lightweight web apps using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, which can be deployed directly through URLs.
