Fake cricket ticket booking scams spark cyber fraud alert across social media

Fake cricket ticket booking websites are emerging as a new cyber fraud threat, with cybercrime authorities receiving a rising number of complaints over the past few days.

According to police officials, cybercriminals are creating fraudulent websites that closely resemble genuine ticket booking platforms. These fake sites are designed to look authentic, making it increasingly difficult for users to identify the difference between official and fraudulent platforms.

Initial investigations revealed that many people are landing on these fake websites through advertisements and links shared on Facebook, Instagram, and other social media platforms. Victims are being targeted while attempting to book tickets for cricket matches online.

Police also warned that cyber fraudsters are using social media to promote fake online lotteries, money-doubling schemes, high-return investment offers, and other attractive deals to lure people into scams.

Authorities have advised the public to carefully verify the authenticity of websites and applications before making any online payment, ticket booking, investment, or financial transaction.

“Please utilise only official websites and trusted platforms, and strictly refrain from clicking on any unknown links, advertisements, or suspicious messages,” the police said in the statement.

Officials further urged citizens to report any suspected cyber fraud immediately through the National Cyber Helpline number 1930 or emergency helpline number 112. Authorities said quick reporting can help protect funds and support timely legal action against cybercriminals.

The warning comes amid growing concerns over the rise in online scams targeting users through fake websites and misleading social media promotions.
