Foxconn cyberattack raises fresh concerns over supply chain and enterprise security risks

Foxconn has confirmed a cyberattack affecting its North American operations after the Nitrogen ransomware group claimed responsibility for breaching the company and stealing confidential data linked to major global technology firms.

A Foxconn spokesperson said some of the company’s factories in North America were impacted by the attack. The company stated that its cybersecurity team immediately activated response mechanisms and implemented operational measures to maintain production and delivery continuity. Foxconn added that affected facilities are gradually returning to normal operations.

The Nitrogen ransomware group claimed it stole nearly 8 TB of data containing more than 11 million files. According to the group, the leaked information includes confidential instructions, internal project documents, and technical drawings connected to projects involving companies such as Apple, Nvidia, Intel, Google, and Dell.

Foxconn did not confirm whether customer information was compromised during the breach.

Nitrogen, which emerged in 2023, is believed to be one of several ransomware groups linked to leaked Conti ransomware code. Cybersecurity researchers have previously warned that the group’s decryptor contains programming flaws that may prevent victims from recovering encrypted files even after paying ransom demands.

Reports also noted that the issue specifically affected malware targeting VMware ESXi environments, raising additional concerns for impacted organizations.

This is not the first ransomware-related incident involving Foxconn. In 2024, the LockBit ransomware group claimed responsibility for an attack on Foxsemicon Integrated Technology, part of the Foxconn Technology Group. Another Foxconn subsidiary in Mexico was also reportedly targeted by LockBit in 2022.

The latest incident highlights growing cybersecurity risks facing global manufacturing and supply chain companies as ransomware groups increasingly target large enterprise networks and critical technology infrastructure.
