Concerns over online content and public order have prompted the Tamil Nadu Cybercrime Wing to issue an urgent notice to X Corp, formerly known as Twitter, seeking immediate action against 18 identified URLs.
The notice, issued on May 8 under Section 79(3)(b) of the Information Technology Act and the IT Rules, 2021, directed the social media platform to remove or block the flagged content. Authorities stated that the posts were allegedly carrying “unlawful content” described as provocative and politically sensitive in nature.
Officials said the identified posts could disturb law and order by encouraging unlawful gatherings and activities. They also warned that such content may potentially lead to damage to property or even loss of life if left unchecked.
According to sources, most of the X accounts under scrutiny were reportedly sharing short videos and other posts critical of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK). The Cybercrime Wing instructed X Corp to suspend or block the specified accounts and URLs within 3 hours of receiving the notice.
Police authorities said the action was taken as a preventive measure to maintain public order and avoid escalation of tensions through social media platforms.
The development highlights increasing monitoring of online platforms by law enforcement agencies over content considered sensitive or capable of triggering public unrest.
