Cybercrime cases continued to rise in Uttar Pradesh in 2024, with the state reporting 11,073 incidents, according to the latest National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data. This translates to nearly 30 cybercrime cases every day, or 1 case every 48 minutes.
The report showed a steady increase in cyber offences over the past 3 years. Uttar Pradesh recorded 10,117 cybercrime cases in 2022, which rose to 10,794 in 2023 and further increased to 11,073 in 2024. Between 2022 and 2024, the state witnessed a rise of 956 cases, marking an overall increase of 9.4%.
Despite the increase, Uttar Pradesh ranked 16th among states and Union Territories in cybercrime rate. The state recorded 4.6 cases per lakh population, lower than the national average of 7.3. Telangana reported the highest cybercrime rate at 71.1, followed by Karnataka at 32.2.
Financial fraud emerged as the most common cyber offence in the state. NCRB data showed 4,469 fraud-related cases involving phishing scams, fake investment apps, OTP fraud, cryptocurrency scams, digital arrest frauds, fake loan offers, and online banking fraud.
The report also highlighted a sharp rise in cybercrimes linked to sexual exploitation. Uttar Pradesh recorded 633 such cases, the highest in the country. These included sextortion, circulation of intimate content, fake social media profiles, and online blackmail using morphed images.
Other motives behind cyber offences included 1,204 cases related to “causing disrepute,” 837 revenge-driven crimes, 212 extortion cases, 117 cases linked to emotional harassment, and 99 cases involving disruption of public services.
The state also reported 1,392 cybercrime cases against women, placing it third nationally. Cases included cyber stalking, online bullying, cyber pornography, and cyber blackmailing. Uttar Pradesh also recorded 186 cybercrime cases against children.
Police handled 17,456 cybercrime investigations in 2024, including pending cases from previous years. The state reported a charge-sheeting rate of 54%, much higher than the national average of 31.9%. However, 3,541 cases remained unresolved due to insufficient evidence, untraced accused, fake SIM cards, encrypted apps, and overseas digital networks.
