Reliance accelerates satellite internet ambitions with planned LEO network expansion

Reliance Industries is reportedly planning a major investment in low earth orbit (LEO) satellites as part of its strategy to enter the satellite communications market. The project is expected to operate under Jio Platforms and could emerge as India’s answer to satellite internet services offered by global players including Starlink and Amazon’s Project Kuiper.

According to reports, the company has formed 6 dedicated internal teams to manage different areas of the initiative, including satellite systems, launches, payload development, and user terminals. Reliance is also said to be in discussions with satellite technology firms and government authorities regarding orbital slot filings with the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).

The planned network is expected to focus on the LEO segment, known for delivering high-speed and low-latency internet connectivity, especially in remote and underserved regions. Industry experts consider LEO satellite infrastructure important for strengthening digital connectivity and future communication networks.

Reports indicate that Mukesh Ambani is personally overseeing the initiative along with senior executives including Reliance President PK Bhatnagar, Jio Platforms CEO Mathew Oommen, and Senior Vice President Aayush Bhatnagar.

Reliance is also reportedly exploring acquisition opportunities involving satellite firms that already hold orbital slots and operational infrastructure, which could help speed up its entry into the market.

The company already has a satellite broadband partnership with SES through Jio Space Technology Ltd. While the latest project remains in the exploratory stage, reports suggest Reliance could aim to make its LEO satellite network operational within the next 2 to 4 years.
