Google retires Project Mariner ahead of new AI announcements at I/O 2026

Google has shut down Project Mariner, its experimental AI-powered web task assistant, with the service officially discontinued on May 4, 2026. The Project Mariner landing page now states, “Thank you for using Project Mariner. It was shut down on May 4th, 2026 and its technology voyaged to other Google products.”

The company first introduced Project Mariner in December 2024 as an AI feature designed to complete tasks across the web on behalf of users. Google later expanded the tool’s capabilities, allowing it to handle up to 10 tasks simultaneously.

Over time, several features powered by Project Mariner were integrated into Google’s broader AI ecosystem. These capabilities are now part of Gemini Agent, which can assist users with tasks such as archiving emails and helping with hotel bookings. Google also incorporated Project Mariner’s agentic technology into AI Mode, its AI-powered search experience.

Earlier this year, Google also introduced a new Chrome feature called “auto-browse,” designed to perform multi-step actions such as researching flight prices. While Google has not confirmed whether the feature uses Project Mariner technology, it appears to compete with agentic browsing tools from companies including OpenAI, Perplexity, and OpenClaw.

The shutdown of Project Mariner comes ahead of Google I/O 2026, scheduled to begin on May 19, where the company is expected to unveil new AI-focused products and updates.
