Google is expanding the capabilities of its smart TV platform with a fresh update aimed at improving content discovery and creativity. The latest rollout brings new features powered by Gemini AI, along with updates to media viewing and personal content management.
A key highlight is the addition of YouTube Shorts directly on the home screen. A new row titled “Short videos for you” will allow users to explore personalised vertical videos without opening a separate app. The feature is expected to roll out to Google TV devices in the US this summer.
The update also introduces Gemini-powered tools designed to make TVs more interactive. One of them, Nano Banana, enables users to create or edit images using simple voice commands. Users can modify photos, change backgrounds, or generate entirely new visuals. This feature was first teased at CES 2026.
Another major addition is Veo, a tool that allows users to create short videos directly on their TV. It supports generating clips from scratch or animating existing images based on voice descriptions. The feature is designed to encourage collaborative and fun content creation. Both Nano Banana and Veo will first roll out on Gemini-enabled TCL Google TV devices in the US.
Google is also enhancing its Photos experience on TV. With Gemini integration, users can search their Google Photos library using voice commands to quickly find specific moments like trips or celebrations. Results appear in an easy-to-browse layout, with options to view images in full screen or start a slideshow.
A new Remix feature in Google Photos allows users to apply styles such as watercolour or oil painting to images, giving them a refreshed look directly on the TV.
In addition, slideshow features are being upgraded. Users can now turn photo albums into dynamic displays with colourful, collage-style layouts. While Photos search and Remix will initially roll out on Gemini-enabled devices in the US, dynamic slideshows will be available globally on supported Google TV devices.
