Amid rising geopolitical tensions, a major cyber incident has exposed sensitive personal data of US military members, raising serious security concerns.
An Iranian cyber group known as ‘Handala’ or ‘Hanzala’ has reportedly leaked names and home addresses of 2,379 US servicemen deployed in the Middle East. The group shared the data on Telegram, claiming it as proof of its “surveillance capabilities”.
The group was also linked to a recent breach involving the personal email of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) director Kash Patel. “To the whole world, we declare: the FBI is just a name, and behind this name, there is no real security,” the group had said earlier on its website.
The Pentagon has launched an investigation into the latest breach. Officials are now examining how the systems were compromised and how such sensitive information was accessed. The repeated nature of these incidents has raised concerns about vulnerabilities in US cybersecurity systems.
The attack comes at a time of escalating tensions between the US and Iran. The US has imposed a blockade on Iranian ports in an effort to push Tehran to accept a peace treaty. Iran had earlier submitted a proposal, but it was rejected, with the US maintaining that there would be no compromise on a nuclear deal.
US leadership has continued to insist that Iran must abandon its nuclear programme. President Donald Trump supported the naval blockade, saying the Iranians are now “chocking like a stuffed pig”. “The blockade is somewhat more effective than the bombing,” he said in an interview.
Another report indicated that the US is also preparing for potential military action, described as “short and powerful” strikes. In response, Iran has warned that any attack would be met with an “unprecedented” reaction.
The incident highlights the growing role of cyber warfare alongside traditional geopolitical conflicts, as nations face increasing risks from digital threats.
