In a bid to strengthen its position in AI-driven creativity, Apple is reportedly working on a major update to its photo editing tools across its devices.
According to a report by a global publication citing journalist Mark Gurman, the company is developing a new set of AI-powered features for iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27. These updates are expected to be showcased at WWDC 2026 and released later this Fall.
The redesigned Photos app is likely to include a new Apple Intelligence Tools menu within the editing interface. This section is expected to introduce 3 key features — Extend, Enhance, and Reframe — aimed at simplifying advanced photo edits.
The Extend tool will allow users to expand images beyond their original frame by generating additional visual content. It may enable users to extend cropped photos and add background details, with AI filling in missing elements using simple zoom gestures.
The Enhance feature is expected to automatically improve images by adjusting lighting, colour balance, and clarity. It is likely to deliver better results compared to current auto-enhance options.
Another feature, Reframe, is designed for spatial photography. It will allow users to adjust the perspective of an image after it has been captured, making it possible to recompose shots, especially those with depth information.
In addition, Apple is also working on an upgraded version of its existing Clean Up tool, which is expected to improve object removal capabilities within photos.
However, the development of these features has faced challenges. Reports suggest that internal testing has revealed reliability issues with Extend and Reframe, with inconsistent results. Due to this, Apple may delay or modify these tools depending on improvements in its AI models.
