A new shift in smartphone innovation may be underway as OpenAI is reportedly working on custom processors designed specifically for AI-focused mobile devices.
According to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the company is partnering with MediaTek and Qualcomm to develop these chips. If AI agent smartphones gain traction, both chipmakers are expected to see long-term demand benefits. However, the project is still at an early stage, with mass production targeted for 2028. The supply chain may also include Luxshare as the exclusive system co-design and manufacturing partner.
Focus on efficiency and AI performance
The reported processor design is expected to prioritise power efficiency, memory management, and strong on-device AI capabilities. More complex tasks could be handled through cloud infrastructure. Key specifications and supply chain details are likely to be finalised by late 2026 or early 2027.
AI agents at the centre
The concept of AI agents is said to be a major driver behind this initiative. Instead of switching between multiple apps, users may rely on a unified system that directly completes tasks. This could mark a shift from traditional app-based ecosystems to more context-aware computing experiences.
Strategy beyond chips
The analyst notes that OpenAI is not just focused on chip development but is also exploring AI-centric smartphones. The company is believed to see tight integration between software, operating systems, and hardware as essential for delivering a seamless AI agent experience.
Smartphones remain a key category for capturing real-time user data, which is critical for improving AI performance. OpenAI may also leverage its AI models, brand presence, and user data to build a broader ecosystem, possibly including subscription-based services bundled with hardware.
Existing partnerships and future plans
OpenAI has already shown interest in hardware development. It is reportedly working on an AI device with Jony Ive. In 2025, the company also announced a multi-year collaboration with Broadcom to design and develop chips for growing AI compute needs.
