Samsung faces patent lawsuit as US firm seeks ban on foldable smartphone lineup

In a fresh patent dispute, Samsung Electronics is facing a lawsuit from Lepton Computing LLC, which is seeking a permanent ban on the company’s foldable smartphone lineup.

Lepton claims it holds patents related to foldable display smartphones and alleges that Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold, Galaxy Z Flip, and Galaxy Z TriFold devices infringe on its core technology. The lawsuit seeks damages, royalties, and a court order to halt sales of all Samsung foldable models.

The company further stated that it had discussions with Samsung as early as 2013 regarding foldable phone technology and shared prototypes and technical details. It alleges that despite this, Samsung proceeded with products that violate its patents.

However, the claims face scrutiny. Reports indicate that the earliest patent cited by Lepton was registered on June 29, 2021, which is around 2 years after Samsung introduced its first foldable phone in September 2019.

Samsung, which has extensive experience handling patent disputes, is expected to challenge the lawsuit. The legal process could extend over several years before any resolution is reached.

The case highlights ongoing tensions in the tech industry around intellectual property, especially in emerging product categories like foldable devices.
