In a move aimed at improving multitasking, WhatsApp is reportedly developing a new notification bubbles feature for Android devices. The update is expected to make conversations easier to access without leaving the current app, though it is still under development and not yet available for testing.

According to a feature tracking platform, the messaging service is working on a system where chats appear as floating bubbles on the screen. These bubbles would allow users to quickly view and reply to messages through a compact chat window, without opening the full app. This could significantly reduce the need to switch between apps while messaging.

The feature is said to function similarly to the chat heads seen in Facebook Messenger. When a new message arrives, a floating icon may appear, displaying the sender’s profile picture along with a WhatsApp indicator. Tapping on the bubble would open a smaller interface for quick replies. Users are also expected to have the option to disable this feature.

The update is likely to work using Android’s native notification system. While most Android devices support notification bubbles, the experience is more stable on devices running Android 11 and above. Older versions may require additional permissions like “draw over other apps,” which could limit compatibility.

The feature is expected to roll out first to select Android beta users before a wider release. However, it will not be available on iOS, as notification bubbles are not supported on iPhones.

This development reflects WhatsApp’s broader effort to make messaging faster, more seamless, and better integrated with Android’s multitasking capabilities.
