Finance ministry urges banks to strengthen defences as AI-driven cyber risks escalate

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Thursday held a meeting with heads of banks to review risks linked to AI, especially following concerns around Anthropic’s Claude Mythos model. The meeting comes after reports that the model can identify vulnerabilities in major operating systems, raising alarms over data security in financial institutions.

According to sources, the discussion focused on understanding emerging AI-driven threats and identifying measures to safeguard banking systems. The meeting was attended by senior bank officials, along with representatives from the Reserve Bank of India and the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology.

Officials stated that banks have been advised to take preemptive steps to strengthen their systems, protect sensitive data, and secure customer funds against potential cyber threats.

A senior finance ministry official said that both the ministry and the RBI are currently studying the extent of risks that such AI advancements could pose to India’s financial ecosystem.

Anthropic, a US-based AI company, recently introduced the Claude Mythos model, which is claimed to outperform humans in certain cybersecurity tasks. Reports suggest that the model has identified and exploited thousands of bugs, including vulnerabilities that are 27 years old, across major operating systems and web browsers.

The company also revealed that unauthorised access was made to the Mythos model, which is considered too powerful for public release. Announced on April 7, the model is being tested under ‘Project Glasswing’, a controlled initiative that allows select organisations to use the Claude Mythos Preview version for defensive cybersecurity purposes.

The development has raised concerns among regulators due to the model’s ability to detect digital vulnerabilities at scale and its potential misuse.
