Pushing the boundaries of atmospheric innovation, Red Balloon Aerospace is preparing to launch its first Super Pressure Balloon (SPB) in the second quarter of this financial year.
The launch will take place from Andhra Pradesh and marks a significant step toward exploring “near space,” a stratospheric layer between 20km and 40km above sea level. This region remains largely unexplored and is beyond the reach of conventional aircraft and satellites.
The SPB will carry a high-resolution imaging payload capable of delivering 25cm to 75cm resolution. It is part of a broader sensor system designed to support multiple applications. The platform can function as a persistent aerial system, offering telecom coverage in underserved rural areas, monitoring large industrial networks across hundreds of kilometers, supporting disaster management across states, and enabling continuous spatial observation for strategic use.
Highlighting the vision behind the project, C.V.S Kiran, Co-founder and CEO of Red Balloon Aerospace, said, “Between the ground and space, there’s an entire domain that’s been underutilized.” He added that while satellites are expensive and take years to deploy, their platforms can be launched within weeks at a fraction of the cost.
Focusing on connectivity, Sireesh Pallikonda, Co-Founder and COO, said the technology aims to reach every village, tribal belt, and coastline where traditional towers fail. He noted that this initiative is not just about innovation but also inclusion, adding that the SPB can enable connectivity for hundreds of millions and support real-time monitoring across millions of square kilometers.
Red Balloon Aerospace is India’s first indigenous developer of AI-powered stratospheric infrastructure. The company builds advanced lighter-than-air platforms for telecom, earth observation, scientific research, and strategic applications. Its modular systems include VISTA (super pressure balloons), ALTIS (tethered aerostats), and HELIX (autonomous airships), operating between 1km and 50km altitude.
