In a move aimed at balancing growth and regulation, India has rolled out a new framework for the online gaming sector with fewer restrictions for most games.
The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology has introduced new “light-touch” rules for online gaming. Under these guidelines, most social games will no longer require mandatory registration, making it easier for developers and gamers.
However, games involving real money or large user bases will continue to face closer scrutiny. These will be monitored by a newly created Online Gaming Authority, which will include officials from multiple ministries.
Games that involve real cash deposits, commonly referred to as real-money gaming, will be subject to tighter regulations. The aim is to reduce risks such as fraud and addiction among users.
Instead of direct government control, compliance will be handled by self-regulatory bodies. This approach is expected to simplify processes, especially for smaller studios and independent developers.
The new framework focuses on protecting users while allowing the gaming industry to expand with fewer restrictions. It aims to create a balance between innovation and responsible gaming practices.
