Apple may prioritise cost control over upgrades in upcoming iPhone 18 model

Amid rising component prices, the next generation of Apple’s flagship smartphone could take a different approach, focusing on cost control rather than major hardware improvements.

Reports suggest that the standard iPhone 18 may launch with some downgraded specifications. These changes could include adjustments in manufacturing process, chipset performance, and RAM capacity. The move is said to be part of Apple’s strategy to manage increasing input costs.

According to a tipster, these changes may also position the device closer to a lower-cost variant, likely to be called the iPhone 18e.

The development comes at a time when the smartphone industry is facing rising costs of key components such as NAND storage and RAM. Despite this, reports indicate that Apple may keep the pricing of the standard iPhone 18 similar to its predecessor, instead of passing on the cost increase to consumers.

Earlier expectations suggested that Apple might absorb these rising costs and protect pricing, even if it impacted profit margins, while securing components in bulk.

For reference, the iPhone 17 was launched in India in September 2025 at a starting price of Rs 82,900 for the 256GB base model. This reflected a Rs 3,000 increase over the previous generation in India, while the US price remained at $799 (around Rs 71,000), offering higher storage.

The iPhone 17 introduced several upgrades over the iPhone 16. It featured a 6.3-inch Super Retina XDR OLED ProMotion display with up to 120Hz refresh rate, powered by the Apple Silicon A19 chipset with a 16-core Neural Engine. The device also included a dual 48-megapixel rear camera setup and an 18-megapixel front camera with Centre Stage.

If the latest reports are accurate, the iPhone 18 could mark a shift in Apple’s strategy, balancing performance and pricing amid growing cost pressures in the global smartphone market.
