A new chapter in global technology cooperation has begun as two major Asian economies align their strategic goals. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and South Korean President Lee Jae-myung met on April 20 to unveil a comprehensive partnership focused on artificial intelligence and semiconductors.
This collaboration comes as both nations navigate shifting global supply chains and intensifying geopolitical tensions. The centrepiece of this engagement is the “India-Korea Digital Bridge,” a framework designed to anchor long-term cooperation in high-tech industries.
The alliance leverages the unique strengths of both countries. South Korea’s leadership in semiconductor manufacturing will complement India’s growing domestic chip ecosystem and skilled talent pool. This partnership aims to reduce dependence on concentrated supply chains while building resilience in critical AI infrastructure.
“In this period of global tensions, India and Korea together send a message of peace and stability… Through our shared efforts, we will continue to contribute towards a peaceful, progressive and inclusive Indo-Pacific,” Prime Minister Modi said. He further emphasized the depth of the ties, stating, “From chips to ships, talent to technology, entertainment to energy, we will realise new opportunities for cooperation in every sector.”
Economic ties are also set for a massive surge. Both leaders committed to nearly doubling bilateral trade from 25.7 billion to 50 billion by 2030. To support this growth, multiple agreements were signed across shipbuilding, steel, and sustainability sectors. A significant move in digital infrastructure saw a major Indian payment firm sign a deal with the Korean Financial Telecommunications & Clearings Institute to integrate digital payment systems.
“Today, bilateral trade between India and Korea has reached 27 billion. Today, we have taken several important decisions to increase this to 50 billion by 2030,” Modi added. By connecting financial frameworks and industrial pipelines, both nations are positioning themselves as natural allies in a rapidly evolving global landscape.
