15 crore AI initiative at IIT Kharagpur targets smarter and safer mining operations

IIT Kharagpur has established the Vikram Sodhi Centre of Excellence for AI-Enabled Geological and Mining Systems. This initiative is supported by a 15 crore funding commitment from Vikram Sodhi. The primary objective is to modernize the national mining industry through the integration of artificial intelligence, focusing on smarter exploration techniques and enhanced operational safety.

The center aims to address critical areas including environmental and social impacts. By utilizing advanced technology, the facility will develop specialized AI solutions for various mining phases. These include strategic planning, mineral processing, and predictive maintenance. There is also a strong emphasis on ESG analytics to ensure sustainable practices across the sector.

Over the next 5 years, the center plans to implement these digital solutions directly in active mines. The initiative will also involve sharing academic research and facilitating the adoption of new technologies in the field. This collaboration with real mining companies ensures that the tools developed are practical and effective for industrial use.

Operating independently within the institute, the center is managed by faculty members and an external advisory board. This structure is designed to create a long-term impact that continues well after the initial funding period. The goal is to build a self-sustaining ecosystem that keeps the industry at the cutting edge of technological innovation.
