Maharashtra pushes rapid land and power approvals to attract data centre and education investments

Maharashtra is stepping up efforts to attract large-scale digital infrastructure investments, with Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis directing officials to ensure swift land allocation and priority power supply for upcoming data centre projects.

At a review meeting, the CM instructed that once agreements with companies are finalised, land allotment must be completed without delay. He emphasised that all key requirements, especially land acquisition, should be executed within defined timelines. The move comes amid rising interest from firms in Central Asia looking to invest in the state.

Fadnavis also stressed the need for coordinated action across departments. He directed the City and Industrial Development Corporation of Maharashtra to create a dedicated land bank for data centre projects and asked the energy department to expedite land allocation for substations to ensure uninterrupted power supply.

Officials noted that infrastructure for data centres is being strengthened, with adequate electricity arrangements being planned to support incoming investments.

Alongside data centres, the state is also accelerating plans for large-scale education and healthcare infrastructure. Fadnavis directed officials to fast-track land allocation for the proposed EduCity and MediCity projects, aimed at attracting global universities and building world-class higher education ecosystems.

In a separate review, he said several leading international universities have shown interest in setting up campuses in Maharashtra and urged departments to work within strict timelines to facilitate these projects.

The EduCity and MediCity developments are planned near the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport, with land acquisition and planning already in progress. A master plan for MediCity has been prepared, and steps are underway to ensure timely land availability.

Fadnavis highlighted that these initiatives will allow students in the state to access globally competitive education locally, while also boosting research, innovation, and startup growth.

He added that the presence of globally reputed universities will enhance opportunities across sectors and strengthen Maharashtra’s position as a growing hub for education, research, and digital infrastructure.
