Meta pushes engineers into AI unit as automation strategy intensifies

In a significant internal move, Meta has begun directing selected engineers to join its new Applied AI Engineering (AAI) unit, making the transition mandatory rather than voluntary. The decision reflects the company’s growing focus on building advanced AI systems to transform its engineering processes.

The AAI unit, led by Reality Labs VP Maher Saba, was initially introduced in March with an open invitation for engineers to join. However, that approach has now changed. In a recent internal memo, Saba stated that selected engineers will be reassigned without the option to decline. “AAI is one of the company’s highest priorities and we’re resourcing it by moving our strongest talent to address it. Therefore, the transfers aren’t optional,” he wrote.

The unit’s core objective is to develop AI agents capable of handling key engineering tasks such as writing code, running tests, and shipping products with minimal human involvement. The long-term goal is to shift engineers into oversight roles, with AI systems managing most of the execution.

To support speed and scale, AAI teams are being structured with ratios of up to 50 engineers per manager. The unit operates under Meta Superintelligence Labs (MSL), led by Alexandr Wang, which is driving the company’s broader AI strategy. MSL recently introduced its first model, Muse Spark, and is building a dedicated hardware team under Rui Xu.

This transition is part of a wider organisational overhaul. The company has already cut around 700 jobs in late March across Reality Labs, recruiting, sales, and parts of Facebook. Reports suggest further layoffs could reach tens of thousands as Meta balances rising AI infrastructure investments.

Within Reality Labs, teams are being reorganised into smaller “AI-native pods,” with engineers now referred to as “AI builders” and given clear targets for AI-assisted output.

CEO Mark Zuckerberg had earlier indicated that 2026 would be the year AI would “dramatically” reshape the company’s operations. The enforced transfers highlight how seriously Meta is pushing toward that vision.
