X enhances chat experience with return of voice messaging feature

In a step to enhance user communication, X has reintroduced the Voice Notes feature within its chat system, allowing users to send audio messages in private conversations.

The feature is now available in X Chat, the platform’s direct messaging service. Users can send voice notes in both one-on-one chats and group conversations, making interactions more flexible and convenient.

To record a voice message, users can tap the voice input icon next to the text box. At launch, recording requires holding the button. Users can also press and hold, then swipe up to continue recording without keeping their finger on the screen. This marks the return of a feature that had been removed earlier.

Voice messaging is a common feature across many messaging platforms. By bringing it back, X is aligning its chat system with competitors that already offer audio messaging as a standard option. This update may improve usability, especially for users who prefer speaking over typing in longer conversations.

According to a report, the update comes as X explores turning parts of its platform into standalone apps. The company has been testing a separate version of X Chat on iOS with enhanced messaging capabilities. X owner Elon Musk had earlier described the platform as an “everything app,” but recent developments suggest a shift towards separating features into different applications. For instance, the company is also testing its payments service, X Money, as a standalone app.

X stated that its messaging system supports end-to-end encryption. However, some security experts have raised concerns about how it compares with other platforms like Signal, which are considered more secure.

Along with Voice Notes, X Chat currently includes features such as message editing and deletion, screenshot alerts, file sharing, voice and video calls, and disappearing messages.
