Google Vids opens free AI video generation with Veo 3.1

In a significant update to its AI video platform, Google has expanded access to advanced video generation features, making them available to a wider audience.

The company announced that all users can now create AI-generated videos using the Veo 3.1 model on Google Vids at no cost. Earlier, this feature was limited to paid subscribers. With the update, users with a personal Google account can generate videos up to 8 seconds long using text prompts or images. Free users are currently limited to 10 video generations per month.

Alongside this, Google introduced custom soundtracks powered by Lyria 3 and Lyria 3 Pro models. Users can create AI-generated audio tracks ranging from 30 seconds to 3 minutes. However, this feature is available only to Google AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers.

The platform also adds AI Avatars for creating anchor-led content. Using Veo 3.1, paid users can generate avatars with consistent face and voice, allowing them to reuse the same character across multiple clips or projects. These avatars can be customised in detail, including appearance, outfits, backgrounds, and placement within scenes, as well as interaction with uploaded objects.

To simplify content creation, Google Vids now includes a Chrome extension for screen recording. Users can record their screen or themselves directly from the web, making video creation faster and more seamless.

The company has also streamlined the publishing process. Users can now export videos directly to YouTube without needing to download and re-upload files. All exports are set to private by default, allowing users to review content before making it public.

This update significantly broadens access to AI-powered video creation tools while introducing new features aimed at improving creativity and ease of use.
