Apple rolls out urgent security patch for older iPhones and iPads

In a move to strengthen device security, Apple has released a critical update aimed at protecting older iPhone and iPad models from a growing cyber threat. The update, rolled out as iOS 18.7.7 and iPadOS 18.7.7 on April 1, focuses on devices that cannot upgrade to iOS 26 or have not yet been updated.

The latest patch extends key security fixes—originally introduced in 2025—to a wider range of Apple devices. These updates are designed to block web-based attacks linked to the DarkSword exploit, which has recently gained attention after its toolkit surfaced on open-source platforms like GitHub.

Security researchers have warned that the public availability of the DarkSword toolkit has significantly lowered the barrier for attackers. This means even less skilled threat actors can now launch sophisticated attacks. The exploit has reportedly been used in targeted campaigns across countries including China, Malaysia, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and Ukraine.

Apple confirmed that devices already running iOS 26 are protected. However, this update ensures that users on older versions—including those avoiding newer interface changes like Liquid Glass—also receive protection. Devices with Automatic Updates enabled are expected to receive the patch automatically.

Additionally, Apple highlighted its Lockdown Mode as an extra layer of defense. First introduced with iOS 16 in 2022, this optional feature is available on iOS 18 and is designed for users who may face advanced cyber threats.

DarkSword is a sophisticated spyware that uses multiple zero-day vulnerabilities to gain complete control over a device. It can move from a simple web page exploit to full system access. Once inside, it can extract sensitive information such as contacts, messages, call history, and even data stored in the iOS Keychain, including passwords and credentials. This data is then sent to attacker-controlled servers.

Apple’s latest update aims to close these vulnerabilities and safeguard users from potential data breaches.
