India’s leading payments platform Razorpay has introduced a new biometric authentication solution, “Passkey,” aimed at making online card transactions faster and more secure while aligning with regulatory norms set by the Reserve Bank of India.
Developed in partnership with Mastercard and soon to be extended to Visa, the solution allows users to authenticate payments using device-based biometrics such as fingerprint or facial recognition, eliminating the need for OTPs.
The move addresses a key challenge in India’s digital payments ecosystem, where nearly 35% of transaction failures are linked to authentication issues like delayed OTPs, incorrect inputs, or redirection errors. At the same time, digital fraud remains a concern, with over 13,500 internet fraud cases and losses exceeding ₹520 crore in FY25, according to RBI data.
Razorpay’s Passkey solution uses device-bound secure biometrics and payment passkey protocols to enable authentication directly on users’ devices. This removes reliance on OTP delivery, manual inputs, or redirects, offering a seamless checkout experience.
Unlike traditional OTP-based systems, passkeys ensure that card details remain tokenised and inaccessible to merchants or third parties, making stolen data ineffective for fraudulent use. Users can complete even high-value transactions through a simple fingerprint or face scan without interruptions.
The company said the solution is designed to improve security for customers, enhance transaction success rates for merchants, and ensure compliance with evolving regulatory requirements.
With biometric authentication and passkeys gaining traction, Razorpay aims to drive the next phase of digital commerce in India—where payments are faster, safer, and more intuitive.
