Goa sees sharp rise in cybercrime cases with 65% jump in 2025

A significant surge in cybercrime has been recorded in Goa, with cases rising sharply in 2025 compared to the previous year, highlighting growing concerns around digital fraud and online safety.

A total of 131 cyber fraud cases were registered in 2025, up from 85 cases in 2024, marking a 65% increase. Over the past 3 years, 298 cases have been recorded, with money successfully recovered in only 17 cases.

Investigations by Goa Police show that many frauds are linked to fake investment schemes, where cybercriminals use fraudulent apps to lure victims with promises of high returns. Authorities also took action by blocking 442 web links, 168 social media accounts, and 866 mobile numbers connected to such activities.

Despite these efforts, 103 cybercrime cases have remained under investigation for more than 6 months. Chief Minister Pramod Sawant stated that the cybercrime unit is using advanced tools and platforms such as Cyber Police, Sammanvay, Pratibimb, and Sayog to strengthen investigations. Police stations are also conducting regular awareness drives to educate citizens about common cyber frauds.

Cyber fraudsters have cheated people in Goa of around ₹100 crore so far. Officials noted that this figure reflects only reported cases and the actual amount could be much higher. Investigations also reveal that many fraudsters operate from outside India, making arrests more challenging.

Authorities have specifically advised senior citizens to remain cautious while interacting with unknown individuals online, as a large number of victims belong to the retired population.

To address the growing threat, the state government has introduced a cybercrime awareness action plan. This includes adding a cyber safety and security curriculum in schools from Class VI onwards. The police will provide draft content to the directorate of education. Additionally, an action plan has been prepared for 13 departments, including police, panchayats, PWD, education, and higher education.

Training programs are also being conducted regularly to enhance the skills of Goa Police personnel in handling cyber offences.

Earlier this year, a report revealed that over 60% of cybercrime cases registered in the last 5 years remain undetected. During this period, 441 cases were registered, out of which only 170 were solved.
