Amid rising geopolitical tensions in West Asia and ongoing energy concerns, Saudi Arabia has turned to an Indian space startup to strengthen its satellite imaging capabilities.
Bengaluru-based, Google-backed Pixxel will supply hyperspectral satellite data to Saudi Arabia’s national geospatial platform, UP42. Instead of purchasing data separately, Saudi agencies will now be able to access Pixxel’s imagery directly through this unified platform.
Pixxel’s Firefly constellation, comprising 18 satellites, captures hyperspectral images across more than 135 spectral bands. Unlike standard optical images, these spectral images provide deeper insights into surface composition by analysing how different materials reflect electromagnetic waves.
“The integration of hyperspectral capabilities into NSG UP42 strengthens Saudi Arabia’s geospatial infrastructure by providing government entities, regulators, and enterprises with deeper environmental and surface intelligence through a unified, sovereign platform,” says a press release from Pixxel.
This technology enables highly detailed analysis of the Earth’s surface. Different materials such as soil, plants, and minerals reflect light differently, creating unique “signatures” that help identify what lies beneath or on the ground with greater accuracy.
Saudi Arabia plans to use this data for multiple applications, including mineral detection, resource exploration, mine site closure monitoring, illegal mining detection, and environmental compliance. It will also support sustainability reporting and science-based regulatory oversight.
While the announcement focuses on civilian uses, hyperspectral imaging also has dual-use potential. It can support applications such as surveillance, camouflage detection, and battle damage assessment.
Pixxel is one of India’s most well-funded space startups, having raised $95 million from investors including Google, Radical Ventures, Lightspeed, Glade Brook Capital Partners, and M&G Catalyst.
