Apple introduces background security update to fix Safari vulnerability across devices

In a quiet but important move, Apple has released its first “background security improvement” update aimed at fixing a vulnerability in its Safari web browser across iPhones, iPads and Macs. The update was detailed in a security advisory published on Tuesday and marks a new approach to delivering critical fixes between major software releases.

The issue was discovered by a security researcher in WebKit, the browser engine that powers Safari and several other apps. According to Apple, the flaw could allow a malicious website to potentially access data from another website within the same browser session if exploited. While the company did not explain why this specific bug was patched now, it confirmed the fix has been deployed through this new update method.

Apple described these background security improvements as “lightweight” updates that deliver essential security patches without waiting for full software upgrades. The feature is available on devices running the latest versions of iOS, iPadOS and macOS (26.1 and above). These updates can target components like Safari, WebKit and other system libraries that require regular security enhancements.

Unlike traditional updates, this rollout required only a quick device restart instead of a longer reboot process. Before this public release, Apple had tested similar fixes with software testers to refine the feature. The company did not immediately respond to a request for further comment from a media outlet.
