US Navy signs $71 million deal with Gecko Robotics to speed up ship maintenance

In a move to improve fleet efficiency, the US Navy has signed a $71 million contract with Gecko Robotics to maintain ships in the Pacific Fleet.

The company’s robots are designed to climb and fly through tight spaces inside ships. These machines will scan vessels for damage, while their AI software can identify required repairs about 50 times faster than humans.

The 5-year contract will cover 18 ships, including destroyers. The use of robotic inspections is expected to reduce maintenance delays and improve overall efficiency.

In one case, a robot inspection helped cut more than 3 months from a ship’s maintenance schedule. This shows the potential for significant time and cost savings.

Gecko Robotics already has 250 robots in operation, with more expected to be deployed. The growing use of these systems highlights a shift towards faster and more advanced maintenance methods.

This development marks a major step in modernising ship upkeep, helping the Navy maintain readiness while reducing operational delays.
