NVIDIA partners with Starcloud to develop space-based AI data centers

In a bold step toward the future of computing, NVIDIA has announced plans to power data centers in space through a new collaboration with Starcloud.

The announcement was made at the company’s annual developers conference in Silicon Valley, where CEO Jensen Huang introduced the Space-1 Vera Rubin Module. This new system is designed to act as a core building block for future orbiting data centers.

Cosmic debut

Starcloud is set to launch its Starcloud-1 satellite in November, marking the “cosmic debut” of NVIDIA’s module. The satellite, roughly the size of a small refrigerator, is expected to deliver 100 times more computing power than previous space-based systems.

The project aims to prove that large language models can operate in space using Google AI powered by NVIDIA GPUs.

AI optimization

The Vera Rubin module is specifically designed for AI workloads. It supports real-time sensing, decision-making and autonomous operations.

Highlighting the milestone, Huang said, “Space computing, the final frontier, has arrived,”

Power supply

One of the biggest advantages of space-based data centers is access to continuous solar energy. Satellites can align with the Sun’s orbit to maintain constant exposure to sunlight, reducing dependence on land and avoiding regulatory challenges on Earth.

However, several technical challenges remain. These include protection from radiation, extreme temperatures and space debris, which are critical factors for long-term operations.

The initiative reflects growing interest among technology companies in building infrastructure beyond Earth to support the rising demand for AI computing power.
