In a move aimed at improving online safety for younger users, WhatsApp is preparing to introduce a new “Parental-Managed Account” feature for children under 13. The update is designed to give parents greater control and visibility over their child’s activity on the platform.
The feature will link a child’s account directly to a parent’s account, allowing full oversight of interactions. Parents will be able to monitor who their child is chatting with, which contacts are added and the groups they join. They will also have the ability to decide who can message the child and limit access to unknown users, creating a more secure communication environment.
To further strengthen safety, WhatsApp will restrict several features for younger users. Reports indicate that children will not have access to functions such as status updates, channels and Meta AI tools. The platform will also introduce a system where messages from unknown or suspicious senders are placed in a separate folder, enabling parents to review and block them if necessary.
The rollout of this feature is expected to happen gradually across different countries, starting with selected regions before expanding globally. Experts highlight that with more children using smartphones and the internet at an early age, such measures are becoming essential. This initiative reflects a broader push by messaging platforms to prioritize child safety while giving parents better tools to supervise digital activity.
