In a shift towards a more focused user experience, Microsoft is reportedly rethinking how artificial intelligence features are integrated into its operating system.
Microsoft is said to have dropped plans to introduce Copilot Suggestions within notifications on Windows 11. The feature, first previewed in 2024, has not appeared even in beta versions and is now reportedly scrapped as part of a broader strategy to reduce excessive AI presence.
According to a report by a publication, the company is moving away from heavily promoting Copilot branding across the user interface. The decision follows criticism around the Recall feature, which raised privacy concerns among users and experts after its initial rollout. Although Recall was later reintroduced with improved safeguards, the backlash reportedly led Microsoft to pause and reassess several AI initiatives.
This shift has also impacted how other AI features are being delivered. Previously previewed Copilot-branded tools in Settings and File Explorer are now being released as standalone assistive features without Copilot branding. Additionally, these tools do not include the agentic capabilities that were initially promised in 2024.
Sources suggest that Microsoft now plans to be more selective with AI features in Windows 11. The company aims to introduce only those capabilities that provide clear and meaningful value to users, rather than adding AI across every interface. This approach is intended to reduce “AI bloat” and avoid overbranding within the operating system.
Meanwhile, Microsoft continues to expand AI offerings in other areas. The company recently introduced Copilot Health, a dedicated feature within its chatbot that allows users to upload health data from wearables, hospitals, and laboratories. Using this data, the AI can answer health-related questions and provide personalised insights.
The latest developments highlight Microsoft’s evolving AI strategy, balancing innovation with usability and user trust.
