NASA begins construction of Dragonfly nuclear-powered drone for Titan mission

NASA has started building the Dragonfly mission, a nuclear-powered rotorcraft designed to explore Titan, the largest moon of Saturn.

Dragonfly is a car-sized drone equipped with 8 rotors and designed to operate in Titan’s dense atmosphere. The mission will use a Multi-Mission Radioisotope Thermoelectric Generator (MMRTG) for power, enabling the spacecraft to conduct long-term exploration on the moon’s surface.

The drone is expected to launch in 2028 aboard a Falcon Heavy rocket developed by SpaceX. After launch, the spacecraft will travel for 6 years before reaching Titan in 2034, where it will begin detailed exploration.

Engineers at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory are currently integrating the key systems of the mission, including its computing systems and power components. Dragonfly is designed to function as a fully autonomous aircraft capable of navigating Titan’s challenging environment.

Titan offers conditions that make flight easier than on Earth. Its dense atmosphere combined with lower gravity can generate strong lift for rotorcraft vehicles. However, the moon’s extremely cold temperatures and a communication delay of about 1 hour between Earth and Titan present significant operational challenges.

Once it arrives, the drone will land near Titan’s equator in a region called Selk Crater. Scientists believe this area contains complex organic materials formed through processes linked to past liquid water.

After landing, Dragonfly will begin flying short distances to explore multiple locations across Titan’s surface. The drone will carry cameras, spectrometers and other scientific sensors to analyse the moon’s environment and study organic compounds.

The mission will also allow the spacecraft to test and examine surface samples, providing valuable scientific data that could help researchers understand the chemistry of Titan and support future research.
