RBI launches pilot programme in Maharashtra to promote safe digital payments

In an effort to strengthen awareness around secure digital transactions, the Reserve Bank of India has launched a pilot initiative aimed at encouraging the safe and wider use of digital payments across the country.

The programme, titled “Awareness Program on Digital Payments,” will initially be conducted in Maharashtra in collaboration with CSC e-Governance Services India Ltd. The initiative was announced as part of the 6th edition of Digital Payments Awareness Week, which is being observed from March 9–13, 2026.

According to the central bank, the pilot programme will focus on educating people in rural and semi-urban regions about the safe use of digital payment systems. The campaign aims to reach 10 lakh participants through in-person awareness sessions.

These sessions will be conducted by Village Level Entrepreneurs (VLEs) who operate within local communities. Through direct engagement, the initiative seeks to help users better understand digital payment platforms and adopt safer transaction practices.

During the launch, Sanjay Malhotra, Governor of the Reserve Bank of India, stressed the importance of maintaining trust in digital payment systems. He highlighted the central bank’s ongoing efforts to improve customer awareness and strengthen protection measures for users.

Malhotra also called on stakeholders across the financial ecosystem to work together to enhance public confidence in digital payments and ensure secure adoption across different regions of the country.

Alongside the pilot programme, the central bank also introduced a multimedia awareness campaign titled “Thoda Dhyan Se.” The campaign encourages users to remain cautious and attentive while making online payments and conducting digital transactions.

Following the launch of the initiative, the RBI Governor held discussions with the Managing Directors and Chief Executive Officers of select Payment Systems Operators (PSOs) to further strengthen the digital payments ecosystem.
