Apple may launch its first foldable iPhone in 2026 with premium design and advanced hardware

Growing leaks suggest that Apple could soon enter the foldable smartphone market. Reports indicate that the company’s first foldable device, tentatively called the iPhone Fold, may debut in September 2026 alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. If the timeline remains unchanged, the launch would also coincide with 50 years since Apple was founded.

Early information suggests the foldable phone may feature a book-style design similar to the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7. This design would allow the device to open like a tablet while still functioning as a standard smartphone when closed. Industry observers believe this approach signals Apple’s plan to compete directly in the premium foldable smartphone category.

A report from a publication has revealed possible details about the device’s memory setup. The foldable iPhone is expected to include 12GB LPDDR5X RAM, bringing it in line with Apple’s current Pro models such as the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max. The RAM modules are reportedly expected to be supplied by Samsung Electronics.

Storage options for the device are also starting to emerge. According to tipster Instant Digital, the foldable phone could arrive in 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB storage variants. The same leak suggests possible pricing for the Chinese market, placing the device firmly in the ultra-premium category. The 256GB version could cost 15,999 yuan (around ₹2.15 lakh), the 512GB model 17,999 yuan (about ₹2.42 lakh), and the 1TB variant 19,999 yuan (approximately ₹2.69 lakh). Prices in other regions may differ.

On the display side, the phone is rumored to feature a 5.5-inch outer screen for quick tasks and a 7.8-inch inner display when unfolded. The larger display is expected to use a 4:3 aspect ratio and both screens are likely to feature AMOLED technology.

Biometric authentication may also change on this model. Reports suggest Apple could skip Face ID and instead integrate Touch ID into the power button. The displays are expected to include only camera cutouts without complex sensor arrays. A dual rear camera setup is also anticipated.

In terms of performance, the foldable device could run on Apple’s A20 Pro chipset, which is also expected to power the Pro models in the iPhone 18 series.

Software is also expected to play an important role. A report from Bloomberg indicates Apple may introduce new multitasking capabilities designed for foldable screens with the iOS 27 update.

Although Apple has not officially confirmed these details, the increasing number of leaks suggests the company may be preparing a major entry into the foldable smartphone market in 2026.
