SpaceX proposes massive satellite network for orbital AI data centres

A new proposal from SpaceX could significantly change the scale of satellite infrastructure in orbit. The company is planning to launch up to 1 million solar-powered satellites that would function as orbital AI data centres.

The plan was submitted to the Federal Communications Commission in January 2026. The proposed network would be far larger than the company’s current satellite system, which already includes nearly 10,000 Starlink satellites in space. However, the idea has raised concerns among astronomers about potential effects on observations of the night sky.

Unlike existing Starlink satellites, the proposed units would orbit at higher altitudes. Because of this position, they could remain sunlit even around midnight. This means tens of thousands of satellites could be visible from Earth each night.

Astronomers say this additional brightness could make it more difficult to observe faint objects in space. Stargazers and research observatories could face greater challenges when studying distant celestial bodies.

Scientists also warn that a much larger number of satellites could create bright streaks across telescope images. This could affect major observatories such as the Vera Rubin Observatory.

Another concern being discussed is the possibility of Kessler syndrome. This refers to a situation where too many objects in orbit increase the risk of collisions, potentially creating more debris and making space operations more dangerous.

The FCC has placed SpaceX’s application on a fast-track review process. However, the agency has not yet granted final approval.

Regulators are currently collecting feedback and reviewing potential impacts. The final decision will consider both the risks to astronomy and the broader issue of space safety before any approval is granted.
