Streaming platforms are increasingly turning to artificial intelligence to improve how films and shows are produced. Netflix recently announced that it has acquired InterPositive, a company co-founded by Ben Affleck that develops AI tools for post-production editing.
According to a report by a media publication citing sources, the deal could be worth up to $600 million, making it one of the biggest acquisitions by Netflix. The streaming company’s largest acquisition so far was around $700 million for Roald Dahl Story Company. While Netflix has not confirmed the exact financial details, sources said the upfront cash payment may be lower, with InterPositive’s owners potentially receiving additional payouts based on specific performance targets.
InterPositive develops AI-powered tools designed to help filmmakers work faster and more efficiently during post-production. The technology can help identify and fix continuity issues, improve scenes and streamline editing workflows. The company says its tools do not generate new content or use footage without permission, focusing instead on assisting creators during the editing process.
The acquisition aligns with Netflix’s wider strategy to integrate AI into film and television production. The company has already used generative AI in its original content, including a building-collapse scene in the Argentine series The Eternaut. Other entertainment companies are also investing in AI technology. Amazon is building internal AI teams for film and television projects, while Disney has partnered with OpenAI. However, the growing use of AI in the film industry has raised concerns among workers, who worry about potential job losses and whether creators are being properly compensated when their work is used to train AI systems.
