Laptop prices likely to rise up to 35 percent amid AI-driven component demand

Laptop buyers may face higher costs in the coming months as global component prices continue to climb. Recent reports suggest that laptop prices could surge by up to 35 percent due to rising costs of key parts like memory and Graphics Processing Units (GPUs). The increase comes as tech companies expand data centres to support the growing demand for artificial intelligence workloads.

Industry sources indicate that price hikes of 20 to 35 percent are possible, depending on the laptop model and configuration. High-performance machines and gaming laptops, which rely heavily on discrete GPUs and high-speed memory modules, are expected to see the most significant increases. Original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) may initially absorb part of the cost, but sustained pressure on components is likely to push retail prices higher.

Market research firms report that the global PC market could shrink by 8 percent this year. Higher product costs and slower replacement cycles are cited as key reasons for declining consumer demand, particularly in price-sensitive regions.

The main drivers behind the price surge are rising DRAM and NAND memory chip costs, combined with higher GPU prices. Memory manufacturers have reportedly reduced production in recent quarters, tightening supply and increasing prices. At the same time, demand for high-performance GPUs has risen due to AI and data centre expansion, further inflating costs.

Projections from market intelligence firms indicate that DRAM contract prices may rise by 10 to 15 percent in the second quarter of 2026, while NAND flash prices could increase by 3 to 8 percent during the same period. The trend reflects ongoing supply constraints and growing demand from AI-driven industries.

As AI continues to drive hardware needs, consumers and enterprises alike should brace for higher laptop costs, especially for premium models and devices designed for high-performance computing.
