OpenAI moves to acquire Promptfoo to strengthen AI agent security

OpenAI has agreed to acquire Promptfoo, a company that helps large enterprises detect and fix security issues in AI models during development. The ChatGPT developer plans to integrate Promptfoo’s technology into OpenAI Frontier, a recently launched platform that allows organisations to build and manage AI agents. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The Frontier platform is designed to help companies develop and deploy AI agents, which OpenAI describes as “AI coworkers.” These agents are expected to operate with proper guardrails and controlled data access while performing complex tasks with limited human supervision.

The acquisition comes as OpenAI and its competitors race to build more advanced AI agents capable of handling sophisticated tasks on behalf of users. At the same time, AI developers are trying to attract more enterprise customers by improving the safety and reliability of their systems.

“OpenAI acquiring Promptfoo signals a clear commitment to making enterprise AI not just powerful, but safe and reliable at scale,” said Ganesh Bell, managing director at Insight Partners, which led an $18.4 million funding round in the startup last year. Andreessen Horowitz also participated in the funding.

Founded 2 years ago, Promptfoo develops open-source tools that help organisations test the security of AI systems. The tools also allow companies to simulate attacks on their own products to identify vulnerabilities, a process known as red-teaming.

The San Francisco-based startup already serves roughly 25% of Fortune 500 companies. It is part of a growing group of firms developing cybersecurity solutions that use AI to defend against hackers, even as malicious actors adopt similar technologies to exploit weaknesses in digital systems.

As part of the acquisition, the Frontier platform will gain automated security testing and red-teaming capabilities. It will also include tools that allow organisations to monitor system changes and track testing activities to meet risk management and compliance requirements.

OpenAI confirmed that it will continue supporting Promptfoo’s open-source projects while integrating its security technology into the Frontier platform.
