Google recently unveiled Android Bench, a benchmarking platform that evaluates artificial intelligence models based on their ability to build Android applications. The system also ranks the best-performing models, helping developers choose suitable AI tools when creating new Android apps and digital experiences.
The company described Android Bench as the official leaderboard for large language models used in Android development. According to the announcement on the Android Developers Blog, the benchmark aims to provide AI developers with “a clear, reliable baseline for what high-quality Android development looks like.”
The evaluation is based on a curated set of development tasks that reflect common Android programming challenges. These include areas such as networking on wearables and migrating applications to the latest version of Jetpack Compose. The tasks were sourced from public GitHub Android repositories and later validated by several AI model developers.
The first version of Android Bench focuses only on measuring model performance. It does not yet test agentic capabilities or the ability of AI models to use external tools. To maintain transparency, the methodology, dataset and testing framework have been made publicly available on GitHub.
The company also designed the benchmark to avoid data contamination, a situation where models might already know the answers from training data. To prevent this, the tasks emphasise reasoning skills instead of memorisation or guessing.
On the current Android Bench leaderboard, Gemini 3.1 Pro ranks in the top position. It is followed by Claude Opus 4.6, GPT-5.2-Codex, Opus 4.5, and Gemini 3 Pro. Developers can test these models through API keys using the latest stable version of Android Studio.
The company said it will continue refining the benchmark methodology to maintain dataset integrity. Future versions of Android Bench will include a larger number of tasks and more complex challenges to further evaluate AI performance in Android development.
