Emerging technologies took centre stage as MediaTek introduced new satellite communication support and AI-powered devices at MWC 2026 in Barcelona. The company announced a partnership with Starlink Mobile to enable wireless emergency alert messages via satellite connectivity.
MediaTek demonstrated the feature on a device powered by its M90 modem, first showcased at MWC last year. The modem supports Sub-6GHz connectivity and is designed to allow users to receive alerts even when they are outside the coverage range of traditional telecom towers.
According to the company, more than 4.4 million users have accessed Starlink Mobile during emergencies. The Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) framework is currently supported for customers in Canada, Japan and the US.
Smartphones equipped with compatible MediaTek chips will be able to receive alerts from 3 systems: the Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) framework, the Commercial Mobile Alert System (CMAS) and the Earthquake and Tsunami Warning System (ETWS). The collaboration aims to improve public safety by expanding emergency communication access through satellite networks.
Alongside satellite alerts, MediaTek also showcased “privacy-first” AI glasses at the event. Named Omni Glasses, the wearable device works with the company’s Dimensity 9500 smartphone chipset. Some features can function without network connectivity. The glasses are designed to offer real-time situational awareness using MediaTek’s flagship mobile chip. It remains unclear whether the company plans to launch a consumer version.
In addition, MediaTek presented new “extreme zoom” technology for smartphones. This feature uses machine learning and the image signal processor on its mobile processors. The company claims the zoom capability can rival professional broadcast equipment and support long-range shots. The technology is being demonstrated at the company’s booth during MWC 2026, which concludes on Thursday.
