Key nationwide changes from March 1, 2026: Rail app shutdown, SIM-linked messaging rule and fuel price revisions

Several regulatory and system-level changes will take effect across India from March 1, 2026, impacting railway passengers, smartphone users and household budgets. The updates include the discontinuation of an existing railway ticketing app, mandatory SIM-binding for messaging platforms and routine monthly fuel price revisions.

Indian Railways to discontinue UTS app

Indian Railways will discontinue its older UTS (Unreserved Ticketing System) mobile application from March 1, 2026. After this date, passengers will no longer be able to book unreserved or platform tickets through the existing UTS app.

Railway authorities have shifted operations to a new unified platform called RailOne. The app will now handle:

  • General unreserved tickets
  • Platform tickets
  • Suburban and short-distance journey tickets

Daily commuters and regular passengers are advised to download and familiarise themselves with RailOne, as the transition is mandatory. Tickets booked through the old UTS app will not be supported once it is phased out.

SIM-binding rule for messaging apps from March 1

A major digital security change will also come into force from March 1, 2026. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has mandated stricter SIM-binding rules for messaging platforms such as WhatsApp, Telegram and Signal.

Under the new rule, messaging apps will function only if the original SIM card used during account registration remains active in the device.

What is SIM-binding?

SIM-binding ensures that a messaging account stays linked strictly to the SIM number used to create it. If the SIM card is removed, replaced, deactivated or ported to another number, the apps will automatically log out and end the active session.

According to the DoT, the measure aims to reduce cybercrime, identity theft and digital fraud, while strengthening national security. The government has stated that no exemptions will be granted, even if the rule affects user convenience.

The deadline ends on February 28, 2026, and the rule officially takes effect from Sunday, March 1, 2026.

Monthly fuel price revisions

As part of routine monthly updates, prices of LPG cylinders, CNG, PNG and aviation turbine fuel (ATF) are also expected to be revised on March 1, 2026. Any changes may directly impact household expenses, transportation costs and air travel fares.
