Air India Express resumes direct Mangaluru–Muscat flights from March 1

Air India Express will restart its direct service between Mangaluru and Muscat from March 1, restoring a crucial international link for coastal Karnataka and nearby Kerala. The move brings major relief to Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) and frequent travellers from Dakshina Kannada and Udupi who depend on this route for work, business, and family visits.

The direct flights had been suspended earlier, forcing passengers to travel through Delhi, Mumbai, or Kannur. This led to longer travel time, higher costs, and added inconvenience. With the service resuming, travellers can now access a faster and more efficient connection between the two cities.

The flights will operate twice a week, on Sundays and Tuesdays, offering a convenient schedule for both business and leisure passengers.

Capt Brijesh Chowta, Member of Parliament for Dakshina Kannada, played a key role in pushing for the restoration of the route. He raised formal requests with the Ministry of Civil Aviation, highlighting the hardships faced by NRIs and local travellers. The Union government responded positively, leading to the reinstatement of the service.

Capt Chowta acknowledged the support of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu in prioritising the return of the Mangaluru–Muscat connection. The move reflects the government’s focus on improving air connectivity for smaller cities and strengthening regional airports.

For passengers, the resumed service means fewer layovers and reduced travel time. Many workers from Dakshina Kannada and Udupi are based in Muscat, and the direct flights will make it easier for them to travel home or return to work.

The route is also expected to boost business and trade ties between Mangaluru and Muscat. Strong cultural and economic links already exist between the two regions. Improved connectivity can support tourism, investment, and bilateral cooperation between India and Oman.

The resumption strengthens Mangaluru International Airport’s position as a key international gateway in southern India. It also aligns with India’s broader aviation strategy of enhancing direct international links from tier-2 cities.
