Ericsson strengthens partnership with Vodafone Idea to upgrade billing systems and expand 4G, 5G networks

In a move aimed at accelerating network modernisation and improving customer experience, Swedish telecom equipment provider Ericsson has secured new contracts from Vodafone Idea to enhance postpaid billing capabilities and expand mobile network infrastructure across India.

Under the agreement, Ericsson will deploy its “Ericsson Charging” solution to support and grow Vi’s postpaid subscriber base while enabling innovative postpaid offerings. The companies had earlier migrated Vi’s prepaid subscribers to Ericsson Charging in 2023, and the latest deal establishes Ericsson as a key pan-India supplier of online charging solutions for both prepaid and postpaid users.

Since 2024, Ericsson has deployed new 5G and 4G sites, added layers to existing infrastructure, and rolled out HPSC (High-Performance Small Cell) towers across 10 telecom circles. The collaboration will continue with new site deployments, capacity upgrades and wider coverage expansion. According to a joint statement, these initiatives are expected to improve indoor connectivity, increase data capacity and support Vi’s ongoing 5G and 4G expansion plans.

The agreement also introduces new “Ericsson Telco IT AI” applications, giving Vi improved control and flexibility over its charging platform. AI-driven tools such as “Anomaly Detection” for Charging applications, “Order Fallout Detection and Prediction”, “Capacity Forecast for Telco Cloud Stack”, and “Intelligent Usage Analysis for Charging” will help enhance service delivery, operational efficiency and customer experience.

Vi will also modernise its legacy offline charging and rating systems through Ericsson’s Convergent Charging System, enabling real-time charging for voice, VoLTE, SMS and data services across both consumer and enterprise segments. The upgrade is expected to improve operational efficiency and prepare the network for future 5G Standalone deployment.

Financial details of the agreement were not disclosed. “Ericsson Charging will help us future-proof our architecture, enabling us to meet the demands of today’s digital environment and tomorrow’s 5G needs as Indians embrace this new era of connectivity,” said Jagbir Singh, CTO, Vi.

“We are delighted to expand our collaboration by deploying Ericsson Charging to modernize Vi’s postpaid rating and charging functionalities from offline to real time rating and charging model. The scalable, AI driven solution will help Vi modernize operations and expedite the deployment of next-generation services,” said Andres Vicente, CEO (Southeast Asia, Oceania and India), Ericsson.
