PM Modi to open Micron’s semiconductor ATMP facility in Gujarat on 28 February

A major boost to India’s semiconductor ambitions is set to take shape in Gujarat as Micron’s new advanced chip facility prepares to begin operations. The project marks a key step in strengthening the country’s role in the global electronics supply chain.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate Micron Technology’s advanced ATMP (Assembly, Testing, Marking and Packaging) facility in Sanand, Gujarat, on 28 February. Located near Ahmedabad, the plant was earlier expected to begin production by late 2024 but is now moving closer to commercial rollout. It will manufacture high-performance memory and storage chips designed for AI and advanced computing applications.

Micron Semiconductor Technology India Pvt. Ltd. has invested ₹22,516 crore in the Sanand facility. The project is expected to create 5,000 direct jobs, including roles for Divyang citizens as operators and technicians. At present, around 2,000 team members are working to ready the plant for full-scale production, according to an official statement from the Gujarat government.

Once operational, the ATMP unit will produce DRAM and NAND products, including SSD solid-state drives, for global markets. These components play a critical role in artificial intelligence systems, where high-speed memory and storage are essential for real-time data processing.

Highlighting the growing importance of memory technology, Micron Chairman, President and CEO Sanjay Mehrotra said, “Memory and storage are central to today’s technology, particularly in the AI field. As AI continues to deliver faster responses, the demand for advanced memory solutions is steadily increasing.”

The Sanand facility will receive DRAM and NAND wafers from Micron’s global manufacturing sites. These wafers will then undergo assembly, performance and capacity testing, marking, and packaging. The finished memory products will be shipped to customers worldwide.

The launch of the Gujarat plant reflects India’s push to build a domestic semiconductor ecosystem while supporting global demand for AI-ready hardware.
